August is in the middle of monsoon season in Nepal it can get very humid, wet and trekking routes are often closed.

Heavy monsoon weather will be highly likely along with thunderstorms. August is one of the least popular months to go trekking in Nepal.

For the most part at 2,000m expect day time temperatures of 28+ degrees and temperatures at night around 16 degrees.

August trekking tips

  • Bring all types of water proofing with you
  • Be prepared for few mountain views

Long, popular or remote treks are not recommended in August due to the monsoon rains. Short hikes around Nagarkot or Dhulikhel should be possible. Dhampus near Pokhara should also be possible. Avoid bus travel to remoter areas, distant or unmarked trails due to the increasing risk of floods and landslides.

What is the weather like in August for trekking in Nepal?

August falls squarely within Nepal's monsoon season, meaning trekkers should expect wet weather. Torrential downpours are common, and these can be heavy and prolonged. While the rain can be a challenge, it also brings a lush greenness to the landscapes and can make for a unique trekking experience. Daytime temperatures in the mountains can reach 28+ degrees Celsius, making for humid conditions. Nights are also relatively warm, with temperatures often around 18 degrees Celsius. The combination of high temperatures and humidity can make trekking feel more strenuous, so it's essential to stay hydrated.

The heavy rains can lead to slippery trails, swollen rivers, and potential landslides, so it's crucial to choose your trekking route carefully and be prepared for possible disruptions. While some trails might be less suitable during the monsoon, others, particularly those in rain-shadow areas, can still be trekked. Lower altitude treks are generally warmer and wetter, while higher altitude treks, while still experiencing rain, might offer slightly cooler temperatures. It's important to remember that microclimates exist within Nepal, and weather can vary significantly from region to region.

* Weather temperatures and conditions change as you go up in altitude or descend. Likewise, there are variations depending on the specific trek and microclimates within the region. Always expect passes and base camps to have more extreme conditions. The temperatures listed here are only used as rough indications. It's essential to consult detailed weather forecasts specific to your chosen trekking route and altitude before your trip, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

Historical weather data for trekking in August

Since publishing my guidebooks we've been keeping an accurate record of both GPS data for trails and the weather to try and help trekkers make decisions.

The following information is correlated based on real trekking guides and trekkers who were in the following areas. The weather data is broken down into the year of the trek, weeks in the month and a note on what a guide or person experienced in terms of weather. We've used EBC, ABC and the APC for weather examples as they cover the widest range of areas.

EBC = Everest Base Camp. ABC = Annapurna Base Camp. APC = Annapurna Circuit.

* Blank years or months just means the guide or data is/was not available. It may also mean we've not had the time to update the data here (we have a lot of data on all treks). We are trying to keep this information as accurate as possible. If you are looking for specific data you may contact us, however you can best support this site by purchasing a guidebook first.

What trekking clothing is needed during August in Nepal?

Given the monsoon conditions in August, breathable and waterproof rain gear is absolutely essential. This includes a good quality rain jacket and pants, as well as a waterproof cover for your backpack. Lightweight, quick-drying clothing is also recommended due to the high humidity and frequent rainfall. Trekking shirts, shorts, and pants made from moisture-wicking fabrics will help you stay as comfortable as possible. While a fleece might be needed for cooler evenings or higher elevations, prioritize lightweight layers that can dry quickly. Be prepared for leeches, which are common during the monsoon season. Insect repellent can be helpful, and gaiters might offer some protection. Drying clothes can be challenging due to the humidity and rain, so packing items that dry quickly is crucial. The combination of heat and rainfall can be intense in August, so dressing appropriately is vital for a comfortable and safe trek. A sleeping bag liner can be a good addition for warmer nights.

Is trekking accommodation on the trails open during August in Nepal?

Most trekking accommodation along the popular routes will be open in August. However, conditions might not be ideal. Rooms in teahouses rarely have fans, making them hot and humid. Leaks may also appear due to the heavy rainfall. It's also important to be aware that if a trekking trail is closed due to dangerous conditions (landslides, flooded rivers, etc.), the accommodation options along that trail will likely be closed as well. It's always advisable to check the status of your chosen route and accommodation before you travel.

Are trekking restaurants on the trails open during August in Nepal?

Similar to accommodation, most restaurants and teahouses along the trekking trails will be open in August. However, the availability of certain food items might be limited due to the monsoon season and potential transportation challenges.

Fresh produce may be less readily available, and some restaurants might offer a reduced menu. It's a good idea to be flexible with your food choices and consider packing some supplementary snacks.

As always, it's customary for trekkers staying in a teahouse to also eat their meals there. Be sure to check with your teahouse owner about their policy on outside food and drinks.

For more detailed information about dining etiquette and teahouse culture during treks, I recommend reading my guidebook trekking in Nepal. This will provide you with valuable insights into local customs and help you make the most of your trekking experience.

Are trekking permits available in August in Nepal?

Yes, trekking permits are available year round in Nepal including August. Permits are available in both Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Do you need travel insurance for trekking in August?

Trekking in Nepal during August is not advisable due to the risks associated with the monsoon season. It's very important to have travel insurance when trekking in August. Wet, slippery paths often lead to many ankle strains and slips. Muddy paths, leeches and washed out trails makes trekking at this time of year very difficult.

Do read about getting proper travel insurance for trekking in Nepal.
