Trekking in Nepal during April

April is one of the best peak trekking months during the spring in Nepal.

This is the middle of the second most popular trekking season in Nepal.

If your trek runs from March into April then you will be trekking during some of the most colorful (flowers, trees) seasons in Nepal.

Early rains are usually light which kick start the spring blooms.

For the most part at 2,000m expect day time temperatures of 22+ degrees and temperatures at night around 7 degrees.

April trekking tips

  • Bring a light rain jacket and backpack rain cover
  • Dress in Layers

All treks are accessible during April in Nepal from Everest to the Annapurna Region. Expect lush valley greens along with spring flower blossoms. This season is completely different to the September seasons in terms of scenery so it's certainly worth considering if you have already gone trekking at a different time of year. This is an excellent time of year to visit Upper Mustang.

What is the weather like in April for trekking in Nepal?

April is a fantastic time to trek in Nepal, as the weather is generally warm and stable. The warmer weather has definitely arrived by April, and daytime temperatures in the mountains can often reach 20+ degrees Celsius, making for pleasant hiking conditions.

While this is true for most trekking routes, it's important to note that temperatures can vary significantly depending on altitude. While it's rare for temperatures to dip below freezing at night in most areas, some high passes can still experience sub-zero temperatures, even in April. Therefore, if your trek involves crossing high passes, you should be prepared for colder conditions and pack accordingly.

For most lower-altitude treks, lows typically hover around 5-7 degrees Celsius. This means you can pack lighter, focusing on layers rather than bulky winter gear.   While April is considered part of the dry season, the occasional weather system can still bring some precipitation. It's not uncommon to experience occasional hail showers, thunderstorms, or rain. These are usually short-lived and shouldn't significantly impact your trek.

Being prepared for these possibilities with appropriate rain gear is always a good idea. Overall, April offers a great balance of comfortable temperatures and relatively low rainfall, making it a popular choice for trekking in Nepal

Historical weather data for trekking in April

Since publishing my guidebooks we've been keeping an accurate record of both GPS data for trails and the weather to try and help trekkers make decisions.

The following information is correlated based on real trekking guides and trekkers who were in the following areas. The weather data is broken down into the year of the trek, weeks in the month and a note on what a guide or person experienced in terms of weather. We've used EBC, ABC and the APC for weather examples as they cover the widest range of areas.

EBC = Everest Base Camp. ABC = Annapurna Base Camp. APC = Annapurna Circuit.

* Blank years or months just means the guide or data is/was not available. It may also mean we've not had the time to update the data here (we have a lot of data on all treks). We are trying to keep this information as accurate as possible. If you are looking for specific data you may contact us, however you can best support this site by purchasing a guidebook first.

What trekking clothing is needed during April in Nepal?

Dressing in layers is always recommended for trekking in Nepal, and April is no exception. While the days can be warm, temperatures can fluctuate, especially at higher altitudes and during the evenings. Good, strong trekking boots are essential, particularly as occasional rain showers can occur.

A windproof and waterproof jacket, along with rainproof backpack covers, are also crucial for dealing with these potential showers.

During the day, breathable trekking shirts, shorts, and pants will be comfortable. A fleece jacket or similar layer will be necessary for the cooler evenings.

Keep in mind that humidity can build up in April, making for sunny, wet, and hot days. Dressing in loose-fitting clothing can help you stay cool and comfortable. While a heavy sleeping bag might not be necessary, a lightweight sleeping bag or a sleeping bag liner is a great addition for added warmth and hygiene in the teahouses.

Is trekking accommodation on the trails open during April in Nepal?

All accommodation along the trekking routes will be open in April. This includes teahouses and lodges along the popular trails. While it's generally not as busy as the peak season of September-November, it's still a good idea to book your accommodation in advance, especially if you're trekking in popular areas or during holidays. This will ensure you have a place to stay, particularly if you're traveling in a group.

Are trekking restaurants on the trails open during April in Nepal?

All restaurants and teahouses along the trekking routes will be open in April. Similar to accommodation, they will be open but may get busy along popular trails. While April isn't as crowded as the peak season, it's still a good idea to arrive at mealtimes a little early, especially at popular stops.

This will help you secure a table and avoid potential delays. It's also important to be aware of local customs regarding dining. In some areas, it's expected that trekkers who stay in a teahouse will also eat their meals there. Be sure to check with your teahouse owner about their policy on outside food and drinks. For more detailed information about dining etiquette and teahouse culture, I recommend reading my guidebook trekking in Nepal. This will help you understand the local customs and make your trekking experience more enjoyable.
